Two Switch formulas deal specifically with embossing, a technique that was originally developed by Kerry Mitchell. This tutorial will cover Switch Embossed and next one will cover Switch Trap Embossed. Both formulas need a specific embossing coloring formula. This tutorial will use Emboss with Textures, which I prefer because of the plugins and additional color functionality available. Kerry's Emboss ucl can also be used.

Open Object Formula Switch Lite (reb5.ufm) and select Switch Embossed. Under the top line of Mandelbot Type the user should see the plugin name of Switch embossed, followed by several lines of embossing parameters. This will be followed by the default Switch plugin for the fractal formula (Mandelbrot Julia Switch). The formula choice can be changed using the browse button on the right. Change the bailout to 10 as this will give the user the best embossing effects. Deep zooms may require a larger bailout, but probably not more than 50. On the Outside tab select Emboss with Textures, which is in reb5.ucl. Select a gradient of your choosing and user shoud see an embossed Mandelbrot. Switch to the Julia form and the user should now see an embossed Julia.

Special Effects
In the Sharing Parameters section are two uprs for use with this tutorial. They are named MandelEmboss and JuliaEmboss. Take a look at them, and in particular, look at the gradient structure. With the color density = 1.0, the central portion of the gradient (position 200) will give the background color, the position near 100 will give the shadow color and the position near 300 will give the illuminated color. Try changing the light angle to see the effects.

Try changing the Emboss Type to see the effects. The bailout test will change the emboss pattern.

The Feathered_manr upr shows a more complex example. Look at the layers and the gradient to see how it was done.
