Interesting article, but I'm not in agreement with the writer. To paraphrase the old saying:
Those who can, do; those who can't, criticize.
I do agree with the writer. The message I get from his essay is that people need to think for themselves rather then just accepting the opinions of others, whether a collective number of "likes", the judgement of an exclusive Academy, or the rantings of a professional critic.
He makes that point at about the middle of the article: "We are uniquely endowed with the capacity to [make art]. Just as miraculously, we have the ability, even the obligation, to judge what we have made, to argue about why we are moved, mystified, delighted or bored by any of it. At least potentially, we are all artists. And because we have the ability to recognize and respond to the creativity of others, we are all, at least potentially, critics, too. This means, above all, that our job is to think."
I've always believed in (and tried to practice) independent thinking, so appreciate that someone who gets paid for ostensibly "thinking for us" would encourage it. He sums it up with this statement near the end: "We need to put our remarkable minds to use and to pay our own experience the honor of taking it seriously." Do it!
